What it is

Laser lithotripsy is the established treatment for ureteric, renal and bladder stones. A flexible or semi-rigid ureteroscope is used to visualise the stone; a laser fibre fragments it into dustable particles; an access sheath supports clearance and intra-renal pressure control. NICE NG118 supports laser lithotripsy as the standard approach for the majority of stone presentations, and the technique extends naturally to cystolitholapaxy for bladder stones and ablation of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC).

Stone case volume is uneven across most private hospitals. An abundance of cases one month, followed by a month with one. Hospitals that own stone equipment face two problems: the capital sits idle in the quiet periods, and when their own kit goes down somebody has to step in at a much higher price. Per-procedure rental solves both - pay only when you use it, and with on-site troubleshooting with plenty of backup, we keep your lists running.

Why Urolase for Stone

Stone case volume is uneven, and when your own kit goes down mid-list someone needs to step in.

Two things that matter for your service:

  • Both lasers supplied.

Holmium and thulium fibre lasers available depending on your surgeon's preference and case complexity.

  • Backup and overflow capacity.

If your own laser is down, or your case load suddenly spikes, we step in. Many hospitals run their own primary kit and use us as backup - that's a contract pattern we explicitly support.

Mr Maitrey DarradConsultant Urologist, Circle The Priory Hospital

Urolase have provided our hospital with holmium lasers for over 10 years and in that time haven't let us down once. I would highly recommend them to all hospitals and their experience has helped on many occasions.

FAQ

01What's the minimum commitment?

There's no minimum commitment on per-procedure rental - you book what you need. For hospitals with consistent volume we offer contract pricing that reduces per-case rates against a committed minimum, but per-procedure is genuinely flexible.

02What are typical lead times?

For confirmed bookings with reasonable notice, we typically deliver within a few working days. For urgent or last-minute requirements call us directly - we can often arrange same-week or short-notice cover depending on technician availability.

03Who covers indemnity?

We carry full clinical indemnity for our technicians and the operation of the equipment we supply. Your surgeons and hospital remain responsible for their own clinical decisions and conduct, as you'd expect.

04Do you provide training for our team if they're new to the procedure?

Our clinical technicians provide on-the-job orientation for theatre teams new to the technique, and they support every case directly so familiarity builds with each procedure. For more structured training pathways, we can advise on connections to manufacturer or specialist surgeon training programmes.

05Can we add other services to the same contract?

Yes - many hospitals use us for multiple urology services through a single contract. Multi-procedure packages typically deliver better per-case rates and consolidate operational arrangements.

06Do you supply everything needed for stone surgery?

We supply the laser, flexible ureteroscope, access sheath, fibres and can help procure anything else you may need. Our clinical technician sets up before each case and supports your surgeon throughout. No equipment, scope or sheath inventory needs to sit on your shelves - everything arrives for each case, calibrated and ready.

07Which case types do you support?

The full stone case range: ureteric, renal and bladder stones via ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy; cystolitholapaxy for bladder stones; and TCC ablation where lasering of urothelial lesions is appropriate. PCNL cases where your team uses additional kit are also supported - we coordinate with your wider theatre setup.

08What if our own laser fails mid-list - can you provide backup?

Yes. We support hospitals whose own laser kit is down (or whose primary supplier has let them down). Where availability allows we can mobilise within hours. Call us directly for urgent backup requirements - that's exactly the situation we're built for.

09Do you supply single-use flexible ureteroscopes?

Yes - we supply single-use flexible ureteroscopes, billed only on cases where they're used. No reprocessing burden, no inventory management, and a fresh scope for every case.
