What it is
Local Anaesthetic Transperineal (LATP) prostate biopsy is the modern standard approach to systematic prostate biopsy. Needles are inserted through the perineum (not the rectum) under ultrasound guidance, with local anaesthetic and no general anaesthesia required. The transperineal route dramatically reduces the risk of sepsis associated with traditional transrectal (TRUS) biopsy and provides better access to the anterior prostate.
LATP is the technique UK centres have now adopted in place of TRUS - driven by NICE guidance, GIRFT recommendations and the published evidence on infection-related complications. For private hospitals offering prostate cancer pathway services, LATP is increasingly the expected default.

Why Urolase for LATP
LATP is the technique UK centres have now adopted in place of TRUS. The shift is driven by published evidence on sepsis rates, NICE guidance, and the GIRFT recommendation. For private hospitals adding LATP, the equipment is specialist and the technique itself benefits from operational experience.
Two things that matter for your service:
Premium ultrasound platform.
The BK ultrasound system with biplane transrectal probe is a leading platform for transperineal biopsy work, providing the high-resolution imaging needed for accurate targeting across the prostate.
Part of your wider urology service.
For hospitals already running other Urolase services, adding LATP means one supplier across multiple offerings. Consistent contracts, consistent technicians, consistent quality.
Clinical Evidence
NICE Diagnostic Guidance DG54 (June 2023) reviewed transperineal biopsy devices and concluded that transperineal biopsy carries a substantially lower risk of sepsis than transrectal biopsy. Drawing on UK Hospital Episode Statistics analysis by Tamhankar et al. (2020), the guidance reported sepsis rates of 1.12% for TRUS biopsy versus 0.42% for transperineal biopsy in routine NHS practice.
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of LATP versus TRUS reported a relative risk for sepsis of 0.16 (95% CI 0.08-0.33) in favour of transperineal - consistent with NICE's conclusion that the transperineal route should now be the default.
The PrecisionPoint multicentre study (BJU International 2021, 1,218 patients) demonstrated the operational feasibility of LATP at scale, including outpatient delivery under local anaesthesia across multiple international centres.
The TRANSLATE trial (Bryant et al., Lancet Oncology 2025;26(5):583-595) compared LATP against TRUS in a UK randomised setting and reported that LATP detected significantly more clinically significant cancer (60% vs 54%, p=0.031) in addition to its sepsis advantage - establishing LATP not only as the safer route but as the more diagnostically effective one. GIRFT 2024 recommends transperineal biopsy as the default approach in UK practice.
FAQ
01What's the minimum commitment?
There's no minimum commitment on per-procedure rental - you book what you need. For hospitals with consistent volume we offer contract pricing that reduces per-case rates against a committed minimum, but per-procedure is genuinely flexible.
02What are typical lead times?
For confirmed bookings with reasonable notice, we typically deliver within a few working days. For urgent or last-minute requirements call us directly - we can often arrange same-week or short-notice cover depending on technician availability.
03Who covers indemnity?
We carry full clinical indemnity for our technicians and the operation of the equipment we supply. Your surgeons and hospital remain responsible for their own clinical decisions and conduct, as you'd expect.
04Do you provide training for our team if they're new to the procedure?
Our clinical technicians provide on-the-job orientation for theatre teams new to the technique, and they support every case directly so familiarity builds with each procedure. For more structured training pathways, we can advise on connections to manufacturer or specialist surgeon training programmes.
05Can we add other services to the same contract?
Yes - many hospitals use us for multiple urology services through a single contract. Multi-procedure packages typically deliver better per-case rates and consolidate operational arrangements.
06Do you supply everything needed for LATP?
Yes. We bring the BK ultrasound system, biplane transrectal probe, Civco stepper and stabiliser, needle guides, template grids, biopsy gun and needles, sterile gel and all direct procedure consumables. Our clinical technician sets up and supports every case.
07Which patient pathways does the service support?
We support the full diagnostic pathway: first biopsies in biopsy-naïve patients with raised PSA or abnormal DRE; repeat biopsies after previous negative TRUS or LATP; and active surveillance protocols. The same equipment and workflow applies across all three.
08Can you help us set up a new LATP service?
Yes - we've helped multiple hospitals launch their LATP service from scratch. We can support equipment, workflow design, technician availability and the practical operational rollout. LATP can be delivered as a theatre case or in a properly equipped clinic-based setting, depending on your patient pathway.
09Can LATP be performed in a clinic, or does it need theatre?
LATP works in both settings. As a local-anaesthetic outpatient procedure, it suits clinic-based delivery for hospitals with appropriate clinic infrastructure (room, equipment access, recovery space, governance). Many UK private hospitals run LATP clinics. We support both clinic and theatre delivery - our equipment and technician arrive ready for the setting you've chosen.
